A door ding is a small, shallow dent in a door, fender, or quarter panel — almost always from another car’s door, a shopping cart, or a bike handlebar in a tight garage. The metal is pushed in but not stretched, and the paint is nearly always intact. That combination makes it the ideal paintless dent repair job: a technician reads it on the reflection board, gets access behind the panel, works the metal back up, taps down the crown, and it’s gone. No filler, no sanding, no repaint, no trip to a body shop.
Most door dings are same-day. A lot of them are done while you wait in the lobby. They’re also the least expensive repair we do, which is why we’d rather you bring in a $150 ding today than live with it for three years and try to explain it to a dealer at trade-in.
We see the same handful of stories over and over. Grocery lots on the east side, where carts get loose in the wind. Downtown garages with columns and narrow stalls. The middle school pickup line. Apartment parking where everybody’s boxed in. And springtime, when a gust catches a door in an open lot. None of it is your fault, and all of it is fixable in an afternoon.

Two reasons. First, dings compound — dealers and buyers price every one of them at trade-in, and three small dings read as a neglected car even when the mechanicals are perfect. Second, the pull-kits sold online tend to make things worse: they pull the low spot too far and create a high spot, which is harder and more expensive to fix than the original ding. We do repair plenty of DIY attempts; we’d just rather see the car first.
